Flora:
Although much of the high plains has been converted to farmland over the last five decades, the mountain slopes remain adorned with natural forests. The vegetation shifts with altitude, featuring bushlands, woodlands, montane dry forests, and afro-alpine grasslands. These unique ecosystems make the area a botanical treasure.

Fauna:
The Abune Yousef Massif is home to 43 species of mammals, including seven of Ethiopia’s endemic species. Notable residents include the Ethiopian wolf, Gelada baboon, golden jackal, caracal, and rock hyrax. You might also spot leopards, hyenas, duikers, and klipspringers.

Birdlife:
Bird enthusiasts will be captivated by the 220 bird species identified in the region, part of Ethiopia’s impressive total of 860 species. The area is a key habitat for birds, including a few pairs of golden eagles.
